Olympic Discovery Trail

A paved trail system that connects Port Townsend on Puget Sound to the Pacific beaches at La Push is 70% on abandoned Railroad grade. The trail is growing as sections are completed and is being constructed as a non-motorized corridor, including equestrian use in most areas. When completed, the trail will cover 120 miles and will be one of the longest trail systems in the US. A year-round opportunity to explore the beautiful scenery edging the northern Olympic Peninsula along the historic route of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroads.

Dungeness Recreation Area

This County Park, with sweeping views of the shipping traffic as they make their way through the Strait of Juan de Fuca, serves as the trailhead for the Dungeness Spit National Wildlife Refuge.  

Dungeness Recreation Area has 67 campsites, 3 restrooms (2 with showers), group camping with a shelter, playground, hiking and equestrian trails, on 216 acres.

 Summer: 7 a.m. until dusk
Winter: Campground is closed October through March

The park is open year-round for day use.

Biking the Quilcene, Brinnon, Hood Canal Area

The Quilcene/Brinnon area is popular with road and mountain bike enthusiasts alike. The area provides scenic roads and challenging mountain bike trails. Whether you enjoy casually peddling along beach-side towns, down-hilling mountainous terrain, or touring the entire Olympic Peninsula you will find the Quilcene/Brinnon area to be an excellent biking environment. Visit the Port Townsend Bicycle Association website for complete information at www.ptbikes.org, or stop by the Olympic National Forest Visitors Center in Quilcene for free state, county, and back country biking maps.

Cycling

Cyclists will find all kinds of terrain, from rugged mountain biking to relaxing family rides. Port Townsend has lots to offer for bicycling. Don't miss the Rhody Bicycle Tour in Port Townsend in the second week of May. Farther west, the Spruce Railroad Trail on Lake Crescent's north shore is an easy trail, great for enjoying the lake. The Olympic Discovery Trail is partially paved but level, and at present stretches from Port Angeles to Sequim. More technical rides include the Foothills Trail south of Port Angeles, and the Mount Mueller Trail west of Lake Crescent.
